Bloodborne Pathogens

In the hospitality industry, it is possible to encounter bodily fluids from guests or other employees. These situations must be taken seriously. Bloodborne pathogens (such as HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C) can have life-altering or even life-threatening consequences. For your safety and the safety of others, proper precautions are essential.

When handling soiled linens or items exposed to bodily fluids:

  • Always wear gloves.

    • This applies to all departments (front desk, housekeeping, maintenance, laundry, etc.)

  • Cover any cuts or open skin with a bandage before putting on gloves.

  • Avoid touching your face, personal items, or clean linens while wearing contaminated gloves.

  • Dispose of gloves properly and wash your hands immediately after.

If You Believe You’ve Been Exposed to Bodily Fluids or Bloodborne Pathogens:
  1. Stop what you are doing immediately.

  2. Wash the exposed area right away with soap and water (or flush eyes with clean water if needed).

  3. Report the incident to your supervisor or manager immediately.

Early reporting is critical for medical documentation and treatment.

  4. Seek medical evaluation as soon as possible.

Some treatments (like post-exposure medication) are time-sensitive and most effective within hours.

  5. Follow all medical or company protocols and complete any required incident forms.

Never ignore a possible exposure. Acting quickly protects your health and ensures you receive any necessary medical care. Safety is always the top priority.
