Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. In a hotel environment, staff must be prepared to act quickly, safely, and confidently in the event of a fire. Understanding how to use fire extinguishers, how the fire alarm system works, and what to do during an emergency helps protect guests, employees, and the property. The following guidelines will help you respond correctly and support emergency personnel when it matters most.
P.A.S.S.
P – Pull the pin
A – Aim at the base of the fire
S – Squeeze the trigger
S – Sweep side to side
Use only on small fires and only if you have a clear exit path.
Know Where Extinguishers Are Located
Be familiar with extinguisher locations in:
Hallways, exits, stairwells
Mechanical and pool rooms
Front desk, kitchen, laundry
Never block or cover an extinguisher.
Different Areas = Different Extinguishers
Mechanical rooms: May use Class B or C for equipment and flammable liquids
Server/IT rooms: Use non-conductive extinguishers safe for electronics
Pool mechanical rooms: Use chemical-rated extinguishers for chlorine/acid fires
Using the wrong extinguisher can make a fire worse.
How Fire Alarms Activate
Fire alarms typically trigger from:
Smoke detectors
Sprinkler activation
Pull stations
The fire monitoring company will notify the fire department automatically.Verify with your management company how your system responds.
Fire Alarm Safety
The alarm is VERY loud.Never silence or reset the system without direct permission from the General Manager or fire/police officials.
If There Is a Fire
If safe, gather:
Master keys
Phone/radio
Guest registration cards (if physical copies)
Then:
Notify management immediately
Evacuate guests and staff to the designated meeting area (know the location)
Do NOT allow guests to stay in rooms
When firefighters arrive, provide master keys, emergency reports/bucket, and any needed information
Only the fire department or management can give the ALL CLEAR.
