Fire Extinguisher

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. In a hotel environment, staff must be prepared to act quickly, safely, and confidently in the event of a fire. Understanding how to use fire extinguishers, how the fire alarm system works, and what to do during an emergency helps protect guests, employees, and the property. The following guidelines will help you respond correctly and support emergency personnel when it matters most.

P.A.S.S.

P – Pull the pin

A – Aim at the base of the fire

S – Squeeze the trigger

S – Sweep side to side

Use only on small fires and only if you have a clear exit path.

Know Where Extinguishers Are Located

Be familiar with extinguisher locations in:

  • Hallways, exits, stairwells

  • Mechanical and pool rooms

  • Front desk, kitchen, laundry

Never block or cover an extinguisher.

Different Areas = Different Extinguishers

Mechanical rooms: May use Class B or C for equipment and flammable liquids

Server/IT rooms: Use non-conductive extinguishers safe for electronics

Pool mechanical rooms: Use chemical-rated extinguishers for chlorine/acid fires

Using the wrong extinguisher can make a fire worse.

How Fire Alarms Activate

Fire alarms typically trigger from:

  • Smoke detectors

  • Sprinkler activation

  • Pull stations

The fire monitoring company will notify the fire department automatically.Verify with your management company how your system responds.

Fire Alarm Safety

The alarm is VERY loud.Never silence or reset the system without direct permission from the General Manager or fire/police officials.

If There Is a Fire

If safe, gather:

  • Master keys

  • Phone/radio

  • Guest registration cards (if physical copies)

Then:

  1. Notify management immediately

  2. Evacuate guests and staff to the designated meeting area (know the location)

  3. Do NOT allow guests to stay in rooms

  4. When firefighters arrive, provide master keys, emergency reports/bucket, and any needed information

Only the fire department or management can give the ALL CLEAR.

Key Reminder

Your priorities are:

  1. Life safety

  2. Clear communication

  3. Supporting emergency responders

Know the locations, know the procedure, and never take shortcuts with fire safety.
