Sales and Revenue Is a Team Effort!
Sales is not just the responsibility of one person or one department—every team member plays a role in helping the hotel succeed. Whether you work in Guest Services, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Food & Beverage, or any other department, you can directly impact revenue, guest satisfaction, and repeat business.
Guest Services (Front Desk)
Guest Service Representatives are often the first and last point of contact. They:
- Help sell rooms and upgrades
- Identify and share potential sales leads
- Communicate guest needs and opportunities
- Support revenue strategies in real time
Housekeeping
Housekeeping may not seem like a sales role, but they are in guest spaces more than anyone else and can spot valuable opportunities, such as:
- Recognizing company names or group affiliations in rooms
- Overhearing guest needs during friendly conversation
- Noticing frequent stays or personal preferences
These observations can lead to new business, corporate accounts, or loyalty opportunities when shared with leadership or sales staff.
Housekeeping can also elevate guest satisfaction by:
- Informing leadership of special preferences (e.g., favorite snacks or beverages)
- Helping create personalized touches like welcome notes or amenity packs
- Delivering unexpected “wow” moments that turn guests into loyal customers
Every Department Matters
Engineering, Food & Beverage, Night Audit, and other departments also interact with guests and may hear about:
- Upcoming events
- Business travel needs
- Requests for meeting space, long-term stays, or group rates
When any team member hears a potential opportunity, it should be shared.
The Goal:
Work together. Communicate. Look for opportunities.
Small observations lead to big revenue - and exceptional guest experiences.
We all contribute to sales, satisfaction, and success.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to upsell at the front desk?
During check-in, after the greeting and before payment. The guest is engaged, the room is not yet fixed in their mind, and the decision costs them nothing to make.
How do you upsell without sounding pushy?
Describe the benefit rather than the room type, offer once, and accept the answer. "For $20 more tonight you'd have the corner room with the sitting area" beats "Would you like to upgrade?"
What should you upsell besides room upgrades?
Late checkout, early check-in, breakfast packages, parking, and adjoining rooms for families. These are smaller decisions and convert at a higher rate.
How do you know which guests to offer upgrades to?
Read the reservation and the guest. Anniversaries, business travel on a company card, extended stays, and families with children each have a different obvious offer.
What if the guest says no?
Accept it immediately and move on warmly. Pressing after a no costs you the goodwill you need for the rest of their stay.
